Sarratt Matters is a community campaign formed by local residents who are deeply concerned about the scale of housing development currently proposed for Sarratt. The campaign has been established to protect the village from unsustainable growth and to ensure that any future development remains appropriate to the character, infrastructure and environmental constraints of this unique rural community.
Current development proposals would result in a 53.5% increase in the number of homes within Sarratt, representing a significant change to the size and nature of the community. This level of expansion is unprecedented for a village of Sarratt’s scale and raises serious concerns about the long-term impact on residents, local services and the surrounding countryside.
Sarratt is a small rural village located within the Green Belt, where the purpose of planning policy is to safeguard the countryside from urban sprawl and preserve the openness and character of rural settlements. The village has very limited public transport links, meaning that residents are heavily reliant on private cars to access schools, employment, shopping facilities, healthcare services and other essential amenities outside the village.
The existing infrastructure is already under pressure and was not designed to accommodate such a substantial increase in housing. Sarratt’s network of narrow and often single-track lanes would struggle to cope with the volume of construction traffic associated with large-scale development, as well as the additional vehicle movements generated by hundreds of new homes. Concerns also exist regarding the capacity of local roads, utilities, drainage systems and community services.
The purpose of the Sarratt Matters campaign is not to oppose all development, but to advocate for a sustainable and balanced approach that respects the village’s rural character, protects the Green Belt, and ensures that infrastructure and services can support any future growth.
The campaign seeks to give residents a collective voice and to work towards safeguarding the unique environment, heritage and community spirit that make Sarratt such a special place to live.
Our message is simple: growth must be sustainable, proportionate and supported by the necessary infrastructure. Without this, the very qualities that define Sarratt as a rural village risk being lost forever.
